Sonya Russo

I started my first and only job my junior year of high school as a part-time substitute with Sugar 'n Spice in 1984. After high school graduation in 1985, I worked as a full-time teacher for a few years, moved away and came back full force in 1998 and have been here since. I have been with Sugar 'n Spice Preschool's for approximately 28 years now, and have had the opportunity to work as a teacher, assistant director, and director at 3 of our Sugar 'n Spice locations, and thoroughly enjoyed each position experienced. I have attended numerous Early Childhood Development classes and conferences throughout the years and am working towards getting my CDA. My favorite thing about working here is the interactions I have with the children, families, and staff. I believe there is a learning opportunity for children with each and every interaction and activity they are involved in while playing. I enjoy putting forth ideas to them and seeing their faces light up when they accomplish their goal. I will always have time for a child who asks me to sit and color with them, to cook me a breakfast of hotdogs with a cup of ketchup to drink in the kitchen center, to build a castle with them in the block center, or dance with them when their favorite songs are played. I also love being able to share my knowledge of child development and classroom management with other teachers and sharing activity ideas with them in the classroom. Sugar 'n Spice will always be my home away from home.

I have three grown children, Alexis, Kourtney, and Jacob. Both my daughters have followed in my footsteps working with children, and enjoy it as much as I do. I also have three grandchildren, Mason, Aspen, and Ellianna, who call me Mimzi and mean the world to me. All three now attend Sugar 'n Spice also. In my free time, I enjoy relaxing at home, spending time with family, swimming, bbq's, fishing, and crabbing, but my favorite thing to do on the weekends is relax!
